Media is all interpretations of digital art. This includes drawings, articles, movies, photography, and more. There is an art to writing and an art to video making. If it can be considered a form of art, it is media. Social networking is how we interact via media, as a response to media, or in the absence of media. It is how we interact as the people behind the screen, and the user base behind the media. Social networking sites are widely used. I use a large number myself consisting of but not limited to Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, TikTok, Discord, Reddit, and Twitter. I use social media sites for three main reasons. The first reason is entertainment. If I am bored or want to laugh, I’ll go to Tiktok and Youtube. They offer entertainment in all sorts of forms from skits to documentaries to life tips. I may also go on sites like Instagram and Twitter and scroll and be entertained by other people’s posts. This may be a birthday party picture or a funny joke. Pinterest is also a good form of visual entertainment where I can spend hours categorizing different pictures on my boards. The second reason I use social media is connection. The first thing I do when I wake up checks Discord for any messages I have missed throughout the night. I may also check my DM’s through sites like Instagram and Twitter. I may post things to my Snapchat story and see who swipes up and comments. All of these are different ways in which I am connecting with people. I call ‌them, text them, and send them images or videos. Through these interactions, I feel connected and sociable. The last reason I use social media is for creation. I love creating content. I make and post videos on sites like Youtube and TikTok. I post pictures on sites like Snapchat and Instagram. I create elaborate Pinterest boards. I create all sorts of content and share it on social media for others to see and interact it with. This brings me a sense of accomplishment and joy. I use social media like Discord, Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok every single day. Others I use frequently such as Twitter and Snapchat. Pinterest and Reddit I use sparingly when I feel like using them. Social media changes my mood depending on what content I consume. It can cause joy, fear, anger, sadness, envy, and more. My social media of choice is Youtube as I spend hours researching the YouTube algorithm, editing videos, creating thumbnails, testing titles, and experimenting with details like tags and descriptions. I live and breathe Youtube and I consider it my passion. It brings me purpose and a sense of connectivity with the world. It allows me a connection that sites like Google cannot. It is an authentic interaction with the world. It inspires me to better myself and makes me proud of what I’ve created. It makes me grateful for my friends and family. And most importantly, it gives me a positive outlook on the world and on life in general. As addicting as it is, I believe social media to be positive in society.
